The children and young people within the Step Up group have made a DVD entitled ‘Our Journey into the Light’.  This was as a result of a partnership project with Victim Support Redbridge and Redbridge Council for Voluntary Services.

The DVD shows the children’s journey from victim to survivor.  It also discusses statistics surrounding sexual abuse and looks at some of the myths and taboos.  The DVD also looks at the grooming process, how the children tried to disclose, what they thought would happen when they did disclose, what adults and professionals need to know and understand and how they think their parents felt.  The final part shows what a survivor is and where the children see themselves now.

The DVD is very powerful and is used as a tool to present workshops in PSHE classes in senior schools, the aim being to raise awareness of sexual abuse and to let children know about the grooming process and where to go for help.  It is also used as a training aid to raise awareness of abuse amongst professionals.  Furthermore, it is helpful for parents and children in the group to see the DVD as it helps them to understand the grooming process and the situation that the family now finds themselves.
